Laura L. Croom is principal of Swanson Elementary School in Omaha, where she taught first grade for 11 years before becoming principal of Underwood Hills Elementary in Omaha in 2001. As a first-grade teacher, Croom distinguished herself by tailoring her curriculum to individual needs, while at the same time helping them participate as members of a community of learners. Croom often connected her instruction with the real world, as when she took students on a supermarket field trip to teach money, measurement and computation skills. She was the school's primary-level team leader and district liaison for the staff development cadre. Each semester, she worked with the vocal music instructor to direct a performing arts production involving over 100 students.
