"I feel enormous satisfaction in sharing the joy of my students as they reach beyond their expectations for excellence," says Kenneth Esveld, who teaches art to elementary and middle school students at Eldora-New Providence School in Eldora. Mr. Esveld has been instrumental in the creation of visiting artist and artist-in-residence programs within his school community. "The artists always leave a lasting mark," says Mr. Esveld, who invites a variety of artists, from "poets to architects. Through their encounters with the artists, students become familiar with the entire spectrum of creative thought. They also learn, hands-on, how artists "integrate knowledge from many areas of study and experience." Art education, as Mr. Esveld understands it and teaches it, provides "a natural environment for students to develop into active learners and critical thinkers who can effectively synthesize learning from many arenas."
