Teacher Kelly McCalla calls her classrooms at Oakland Elementary School in Greenwood the "Magic Kingdom of Learning." In this kingdom, her students read and perform Shakespeare, track the progress of the Iditarod, and recreate pioneer life through costumes, food and activities. Using parent volunteers, school-business partnerships and guest speakers, Mrs. McCalla relates her activity-based, integrated instruction to the real world. She has earned numerous honors, including South Carolina Teacher of the Year. She is National Board Certified and active in statewide education policymaking and teacher recruitment. Mrs. McCalla chairs the South Carolina Teacher Forum, an organization that promotes teacher quality and leadership, and serves on the Governor's Math and Science Advisory Board.
