Keith Robinson teaches American History and American Government to eleventh- and twelfth-graders at Maple Valley Community School in Mapleton. In an effort to help students identify with their community, Mr. Robinson has incorporated more local history into the curriculum. A photographic record of regional architecture, histories of every town in the area and interviews of older residents are some of the strategies he has used to teach students historical research skills and encourage pride in the community. For many years, Mr. Robinson has helped provide opportunities for students to attend the Presidential Classroom for Young Americans held each summer in Washington, D.C. and has also served as a volunteer teacher for the program. Mr. Robinson was 1994 Iowa Teacher of the Year, and he has just completed a year of service as Iowa's Ambassador for Education. In retirement Mr. Robinson owns and operates The Museum Of American History located in Mapleton, Iowa. Mr. Robinson restored the beautiful old church building and developed the museum beginning work in 1988.
