To improve the abstract, math-heavy chemistry curriculum at Clarkston High School in Clarkston, teacher Keith Cook introduced the Chemcon program. Developed by the American Chemical Society, Chemcon takes a theme-based approach to chemistry instruction, focusing on evaluation, synthesis and the integration of knowledge that is based around the chemistry that students encounter in their everyday lives. The program has resulted in increased enrollment in chemistry. A strong believer in effective professional development, Mr. Cook and his wife recently shared a variety of science activities for young children at a Michigan Science Teachers Conference. He also serves on a committee focused on helping teachers incorporate technology effectively in their lessons.
