Kathleen Ward-Bowen's third-grade class at Narragansett Elementary School in Narragansett serves as a model of integrated science and math teaching for area colleges and universities. Examples of Mrs. Ward-Bowen's creative, hands-on approach include a recent garden project, in which students raised funds and created a living outdoor lab. Her Litter-Free Lunch Day program teaches students about waste disposal as they work to reduce the amount of trash that the school generates. Aware that she is a role model for many girls, she developed an after-school career familiarization program, Girls Investigating Math and Science. As the school's science coordinator, Mrs. Ward-Bowen has orchestrated Science and Energy fairs and organized professional development opportunities for fellow teachers.
