"All my students will become readers and writers," says Kathleen Magee, who teaches second graders at Crestwood Elementary School in Las Vegas. Because many of her students are from Spanish-speaking families, Mrs. Magee fulfills her literacy pledge by having students' at-home reading lists include Spanish titles. To supplement traditional grade book assessment strategies, Mrs. Magee uses the Monitoring Book, a detailed, anecdotal and continuous account of each student's performance. Mrs. Magee has introduced this assessment strategy at a number of professional workshops. Mrs. Magee participates at the district, state and national level in forums engaging in educational research and improving the educational network. In 1991, Mrs. Magee was selected Nevada Teacher of the Year by the Nevada State Department of Education.
