Kathleen Agnew, English teacher and chair of the English department at Sweet Grass County High School in Big Timber, has implemented an elective language arts program that allows students to choose courses in such subjects as American literature, British literature, mythology and creative writing. In addition to giving students greater control over what they study, the program allows teachers to draw upon their areas of expertise. Mrs. Agnew also helped develop a program called Project Success, which promotes greater communication among students and between students and teachers, with the goal of improving achievement and self-esteem and generating greater participation in extra-curricular activities.
