Though Kathi Rice teaches second-grade at Marvin Moss Elementary School in Sparks, her impact as an educator is recognized throughout the Northern Nevada region. She developed a math lab aimed at helping at-risk and limited English-proficiency students; the program earned her a 1991 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Education. She has served as director of the Northern Nevada Writing Project, where she instituted free summer writing camps for at-risk students and free writing workshops for parents. Mrs. Rice also co-authored an extensive three-year math education training program for the district, and is a master teacher with the National Teachers of Technology Institute.
