Kathi Flexman is a reading specialist at Mission Trail Elementary School in Leawood. Previously she was the district's peer assistant, mentoring new teachers in schools throughout the district. Formerly a communications arts specialist at Mission Trail, Flexman's teaching strategies included spelling words and sentences with alphabet pasta and and leaving scavenger hunt clues throughout the building to promote reading. Flexman also implemented Reading Stars of the Week, through which she rewarded students for reading progress with certificates, bookmarks and food coupons donated by local businesses. Her annual Camp Read-a-lot makes reading fun, as students gather at the school in tents and read with flashlights. Currently a member of Mission Trail's Professional Learning Communities (PLC) Leadership Team, Flexman was a former co-chair of the school's Curriculum and Instruction Committee, through which she shared effective language arts practices with other teachers during weekly Communication Arts Focus Group meetings.
