"I feel successful when children want to come to the library and when they want to read books," says Julia Taylor, media coordinator at Clyde Erwin Elementary School in Jacksonville. Mrs. Taylor has developed an after-school program designed to serve at-risk children attending Clyde Erwin Elementary School. Children are enrolled as kindergartners into "The Key," a program that combines daycare with enrichment units. In addition to meeting three times a week for tutorials, each child is assigned a volunteer mentor who takes interest in that child's scholastic and personal development. Depending on the availability of funds, the program is also complemented by summer sessions and field trips. Says Mrs. Taylor, "We try to hand these children the key that will enable them to be successful in school and in life."
