On any given day, visitors to Julia Dennett's fifth- and sixth-grade classroom at Sandwich Central School in Sandwich might encounter Woodrow Wilson, George III, a medieval banquet or a Middle Eastern bazaar. They are examples of the costumes and activities Ms. Dennett uses to make learning come alive for her students. Her interdisciplinary approach allows students to make connections between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement, or between Japanese Samurai and the Middle Ages. She provides differentiated instruction to meet the needs and ability levels of each of her students, using multiple intelligences and authentic assessment. Ms. Dennett is also a member of the district's Social Studies Curriculum Committee.
