Sixth-grade teacher Judy Koons of M.D. Williams Intermediate School in Pocahontas focuses on programs that help students understand the importance, relevance and pleasure of mathematics. She has played an integral role in the success of the National Science Foundation's Connected Math Project (CMP) at Williams and has fostered parental involvement through Family Math nights and weekly Home/School meetings related to the CMP. A tireless advocate for improved math education, Mrs. Koons was state facilitator of the PBS Middle School Math Project, an on-line professional development project, and works with the Arkansas Math Crusade to retrain math teachers. She also sponsors the sixth-grade math club and hosts after-school help sessions.
