Judith volunteers and serves on the board of Orange County’s Padres Unidos, a community based nonprofit organization that provides parenting classes for Latino families in support of improving academic achievement and community engagement. She continues to facilitate partnerships for Pio Elementary’s many community partners. Judith served as founding principal of Pio Pico Elementary School in Santa Ana, since its opening in 1991, as a demonstration school for bilingual education and full inclusion of students with special needs. By involving all stakeholders and establishing partnerships with parents, academic, professional and state institutions, she has taken major and successful steps towards improving educational outcomes in her community. She has implemented various strategies for motivating students struggling with reading. Together with Don Crevier, she implemented Crevier BMW Book Buddies, which continues today with support of Penske Automotive employees in Santa Ana. Judith initiated Orange County’s first Academic Volunteer Mentor Service program in which County of Orange employees as well as city staff and local business employees spent one flex-lunch period a week on campus mentoring third through fifth graders.
