A former research scientist, teacher Joyce Tugel makes inquiry and experimentation integral to her chemistry and physical science curricula at Marshwood High School in South Berwick. Mrs. Tugel incorporates the inquiry process into a class project in which student teams decide on a topic of study, then research, design, conduct and analyze investigations around that topic. Mrs. Tugel also allows her students' learning to impact the greater community: through her outreach program, students conduct science lessons for elementary classes in the district. In addition, her regional water-monitoring project unites students and community members as they collect and analyze water samples and contribute their data to state water quality databases.
