Joyce Carey encourages each of her students to think critically and to approach every problem both as an individual and through cooperative challenge. A team teacher of a joint second and third-grade class at Benjamin Franklin School in Glen Ellyn, Ms. Carey has also helped develop a program through which severely handicapped students from the Phillip J. Rock Center and School join her class for part of each school day. She helps students to cultivate greater appreciation for their differences in their skills and abilities. The breadth of her concern and dedication led to her designation as 1989-1990 Illinois Teacher of the Year.
