Joyce Ann Winburn teaches English, Spanish I and II, speech and drama to the 146 students that attend Eminence High School in Eminence. As a participant in the Kentucky Education Reform Act, Ms. Winburn has been involved in a state-wide effort to restructure schools and curricula and to advance the concept that education should follow "real life" expectations and models. At Eminence High School, Ms. Winburn is the creator of the Parents as Writing Partner program, offering bi-monthly classes to parents to help improve their abilities as at-home teachers. Parents are tutored in the creative writing process, familiarized with the Holistic Evaluation Guide and required to produce Parent Portfolios. The program, says Ms. Winburn, "helps parents develop an understanding of the educational process and become more knowledgeable about the goals of the Kentucky Education Reform Act."
