Currently superintendent of Islesboro, Maine, Joseph Mattos was principal of James H. Bean Elementary School in Sidney at the time of his Milken Educator Award, where he gained public recognition as Maine's Distinguished Principal in 1990. Actively involved in both professional and civic organizations, Mr. Mattos personifies excellence in education. He is highly respected for his belief that education must be supported by an active partnership among parents and members of the community and maintains that nothing is more important than "guiding the lives of children." Mr. Mattos's enthusiasm for education was exemplified by his extensive involvement with the Maine Principals' Academy and the Maine Elementary Principals Association, where he previously served as president. Mr. Mattos recently completed his doctorate at the University of Maine. His dissertation was titled "Improving Teacher Practice: Teachers' Perspectives on Capacity Building Initiatives in Literacy."
