"Children, today, have a basic mistrust of what the future holds," says John Burgess, principal of Clayton High School in Clayton. It falls to educators, according to Mr. Burgess, to help students renew their trust in the future. Mr. Burgess adds that although it has always been the educator's role to meet this responsibility, the prospect of a positive future in today's world is more directly threatened by a host of complex social difficulties. At Clayton High School, Mr. Burgess has implemented a program of weekly faculty meetings, monthly meetings with the Parent Advisory Committee, and regularly scheduled meetings with the Student Council. Mr. Burgess stresses that commitment to communication will help all parties work together for a positive outcome. He would also like to see the Inter-Active Fiber-optic Television classroom, that already makes courses from Clovis Community College available to students and community, expand its services and offerings. He hopes that the Inter- Active television program at Clayton High School "will someday be a community center that all of Clayton will be able to use.
