Joanne Johnson, who teaches third and fourth graders at Goshen Elementary School in Eugene, feels fortunate "as a teacher of children and a teacher of teachers," to have the best of both educational worlds. Using her third and fourth grade class as the model, Mrs. Johnson has worked with and lectured to teachers throughout the country. With a focus on holistic, reality-based education, she has helped establish a school store managed and operated entirely by students. The responsibilities of buying, stocking and selling store merchandise provide the opportunity for her students to learn problem-solving and decision-making skills, thereby helping them become, in her words-"masters of their solutions." Mrs. Johnson points out that her classroom, like classrooms everywhere, is a place of multiple literacies. "It is my mission as an educator," she explains, "to meet all my students at their developmental level and to instruct them accordingly."
