JoAnn vonNormann is a Title IC Migrant teacher at Pine Grove Elementary School, a predominantly Hispanic rural school serving 126 students in Hood River. "The Schoolwide Project" Ms. vonNormann helped implement at Pine Grove Elementary School allows specialists such as herself to collaborate with classroom teachers. The Spanish reading component that she adapted to complement the English thematic units has facilitated instruction and understanding for second-language learners. To increase her own understanding of the Spanish language and culture, Ms. vonNormann recently spent a month at a Spanish Language Institute in Mexico. The "Book Bag Project" she established supports family literacy and promotes reading as a family pursuit. Ms. vonNormann has acted as an important liaison to the community with regard to health, education and general welfare. Ms. vonNormann is a 1996 recipient of the United States Department of Education Title I Distinguished Educators Award.
