"High expectations for student achievement are reinforced daily through building procedures that support a positive and orderly climate where students can learn," says Joan Redmond, principal of Timmons Elementary School in Chagrin Falls. The Learning Center, a remediation, enrichment and intervention resource project entirely staffed and run by volunteer parents, is one of the many programs developed by Mrs. Redmond to benefit the third- through fifth-graders at Timmons. The Writer's Workshop and Recess Writing are two additional programs designed to give students assistance in the development of writing skills. To enhance the teaching of science, she has also established the Science Center, a well-equipped, hands-on elementary science laboratory. As a member of the Board of Directors of the Ohio Association of Elementary School Principals, Mrs. Redmond has helped to determine policies that have shaped education in her state.
