While principal of West Pine Middle School in West End, Joan Frye created an enrichment cluster program that allowed students from all grade levels to join groups devoted to a common interest, such as veterinary science, drama or the stock market. The clusters met weekly to conceive and develop a real-world "product," such as an exercise video from the aerobics cluster or translated text from the foreign language cluster. The "product" was then presented at the end of the program at an open house attended by parents and community members. Another of Mrs. Frye's programs, Save Our Students, provided tutoring, a range of social activities, and unique leadership opportunities to students identified as "latchkey" children.
