At Olivewood Elementary School in National City, a community with a high percentage of limited English-proficient students, fourth-grade teacher Jessie Andrade makes learning come alive. From writing recipes in English to panning for gold, Ms. Andrade gets students actively involved in their learning. She assigns family homework projects that involve parents in their children's schooling, honor family traditions, and inspire deeper, more meaningful learning. As Olivewood's technology liaison, she conducts student and staff technology training, helps run a computer camp, and trains students to be computer helpers for other students and teachers. Ms. Andrade demonstrates her dedication to the community through her work with the student council and as a mentor for young women.
