Jennifer Yoo currently the principal of Gaspar De Portola Charter Middle School. Prior to that, she was assistant principal at Welby Way Elementary School in West Hills, where she previously taught third grade, helping her students excel on standardized tests. During 1999-2000, they received scores above 90 percent for reading, math and language on the Stanford-9 test, and 88 percent of her students scored above 90 percent on the STAR test. Yoo helped redesign Welby Way's method of teacher evaluation by directly correlating it to state standards. She also initiated a before-school reading program for teachers and teacher assistants called the Professional Literature Club, and headed the El Camino Mentoring Program for her school, carefully tracking mentees and matching them with approximately 100 tutors. In 1995, Yoo established a camp for severely epileptic children, where she works every summer. Yoo has also served as a literacy coach for UCLA's Principal Leadership Institute (PLI) program. Passionate about teaching, Yoo credits her parents for bringing her to the United States from Korea so she could pursue a better education.
