Seventh- and eighth-grade English teacher Jennifer Royall promotes writing as the academic focus at Sacajawea Middle School in Bozeman. Using authentic learning units and assessments in literature, writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking, Ms. Royall enriches her interdisciplinary curriculum with presentations by visiting artists and writers from the community. She began a lunchtime Creative Writing Club through which she has helped several of her students publish their writing. A National Board Certified teacher, she leads the schoolwide committee for the state's MISTA (Montana Improving Schools Through Accreditation) program and helped develop district-wide curricula and assessment tools. Ms. Royall serves on the district's professional development and mentoring committees and researched and initiated a mentoring program at Sacajawea Middle School that influenced the launch of a similar program at the district level.
