In her 27 year teaching career, Dr. Palmer has worked in 7 elementary schools and has taken on multiple roles. She has been a classroom teacher, a reading specialist, a mentor teacher, an assistant principal and an instructional facilitator (professional developer). Most recently, she has returned to her favorite role, that of reading specialist. She joined Hall’s Cross Roads Elementary School, a Title 1 school in Aberdeen, Maryland. She continues to use data and her professional development expertise to be a literacy leader at the school and in the Aberdeen community. She continues to strive to make learning fun, engaging students by dressing up as a variety of characters for lessons and by providing students choices in what they read and how they show what they know. She is working to develop a culture of literacy through the implementation of reading and writing workshop, through a summer book mailing program to keep students reading and multiple workshops for families. She has also co-authored the book Not This But That: No More Phonics and Spelling Worksheets published by Heinemann in 2015, a practical book for teachers that helps them to make phonics instruction meaningful and engaging.
