Jeffrey Swenerton, retired since 2003 after more than 30 years of teaching, was one of the first 12 educators in California to receive the Milken Educator Award. Swenerton has served as principal at several California schools, including Del Mar Hills School, Carmel Del Mar School, and Sage Canyon School in Del Mar. At the time of his award in 1987, Swenerton's innovations included an artist-in-residence program in drama and a demonstration K-6 science lab. A hands-on administrator, he regularly rewarded students by treating them to lunch. Swenerton is a strong advocate of instructor development, and conducted a weekly class in which he demonstrated effective teaching techniques. His community work included serving as board member on the Town Council and as captain of the Volunteer Fire Department. Today, he attends frequent reunions of retired teachers, staff and administrators from the Del Mar Union School District, is chairperson of his local community Town Council, and serves on the board of a San Diego land conservancy dedicated to preserving open space.
