Jeffrey Johnston's teaching philosophy is summed up by a sign in his classroom that reads, "A mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions." The science teacher at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School in Gardnerville stretches his students' minds through a variety of hands-on science activities that involve everything from lasers to lizards. He was the first teacher in his school to coordinate a trip to San Francisco's Exploratorium for his students, and was also the principal author of all 27 science curriculum units currently being used by the Douglas County School District, many of which have been implemented in other school districts across the nation.
