The new principal of Columbia's Dreher High School, Jeanne Stiglbauer, transformed her previous school, the troubled urban Hand Middle School, into a national Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. At Hand Middle School, Mrs. Stiglbauer secured a grant to develop a standards-aligned arts-integrated curriculum, established school-wide writing standards, initiated an Exemplary Writing Hall of Fame program, extended the school day and year, and instituted an instructional technology plan. Interdisciplinary teaching teams and professional growth opportunities strengthened faculty and staff commitment, while Mrs. Stiglbauer's family and community partnership program enriched the school with new facilities, activities and opportunities. In the school's new climate of pride and accomplishment, student achievement has soared. Mrs. Stiglbauer is currently taking part in a principal training program through the Center for Creative Leadership.
