"I want my students to be independent thinkers but cooperative workers," says Jeanne Ecton, who teaches in the Project Challenge school-wide enrichment program at Boonsboro Elementary School in Boonsboro. As the Project Challenge teacher, Mrs. Ecton teaches every one of the school's 588 students weekly, and she conducts monthly classes in thinking skills for all 22 teachers. In addition to the many enrichment lessons and activities in math, science and social studies that she shares with students, Mrs. Ecton has developed projects that address the issues facing her community. For example, experiments, field studies and other related activities serve to inform students on the vital water conservation effort in their area. Through multicultural activities and electronic exchanges via the Internet and the G.L.O.B.E. program, Mrs. Ecton provides her students opportunities to know the world beyond their rural community.
