Jean Williams has taught Spanish at Douglas County High School since 1978, and has been often cited for putting learning to practical relevant use. Examples are her volunteer work as a translator for the local police and sheriff's departments, and for local banks and churches, while her students use their Spanish language skills in newspaper publishing, advertising, storytelling, and learn-by-doing projects. "Teachers must meet the needs of students," she says, "not the other way around." Mrs. Williams is listed in Who's Who Among Black Americans and Who's Who Among Female Executives, and was the 1988 Georgia Teacher of the Year.
