Described as a "magnet of hope" by colleagues at Martin Elementary School in Deming, Principal Javier Marquez Milo helped all students reach their potential. He implemented a comprehensive reading program and created a dual language school in which students become proficient in English and Spanish. Under Mr. Milo's leadership, Martin Elementary School grew from the lowest to the highest performing school in the district, and was recognized as one of the top 10 schools in New Mexico for math achievement. He shared his leadership practices with other schools in the state, and visited with each of his teachers daily about curriculum and achievement levels of students. Mr. Milo was a member of the New Mexico Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education, and the New Mexico Coalition of School Administrators.
