Teacher Janet Hards blends the old with the new to educate her fourth-grade students at Auburn Elementary School in rural Auburn. Mrs. Hards's unit on quilting integrates history, math and art: students research the history of quilting in Kansas, which involves the history of the state itself, and then use their knowledge of fractions, geometry and measurements to create their own quilt designs. She pioneered the integration of technology in her district, which her students use to conduct research and create multimedia presentations. As a member of the district's technology cadre, Mrs. Hards was selected to pilot the district's new computer-based report card system and frequently provides computer training and assistance to fellow educators.
