After retiring from the principalship in 1993, Jane Thompson became director of Collaborating Academic Partnerships (CAPs) in the College of Education at Aurora University. The CAPs program serves in the professional development of educators through a network of partnerships including regional offices of education, school districts, museums, community colleges, and other educational entities throughout the state of Illinois. Jane retired from the directorship in June 2002, moved to Michigan and currently is a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children, serves on a board for an area counseling service, volunteers for a shelter for abused women and children and the homeless, and coedits her community association's newsletter.
My association with Milken Educator Award winners and the Milken Family Foundation provide me with some of my fondest memories of my teaching and administrative career. Now, more than ever perhaps, the need for recognition of leaders in our field is paramount. Their stories must be communicated to a public that frequently derives its opinions of K-12 education from negatively biased critics and those with hidden agendas. Thank you, Milken Family Foundation, for your incredible commitment to education.
