Last year, Jana Larson's fourth-graders at Sawtooth Elementary School in Grand Marais joined the International Greenland Expedition without ever leaving the classroom. Using the World Wide Web, Ms. Larson's students tracked the progress of a team of explorers traveling through Greenland. Her students investigated Greenland's history, culture, arts and geography, and began a correspondence with Inuit students from the arctic island. She frequently invites parents to participate in the teaching process and is a mentor to beginning teachers. Ms. Larson led her colleagues in preparing and training for the new Minnesota Graduation Standards and is part of the district's new curriculum cycle, which fosters communication and accountability across all grade levels.
