Biographical Information

Jamila Banks serves as a dual immersion (Spanish/English) kindergarten teacher at Edison Language Academy in the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District. Banks’ enthusiasm for teaching kindergarten is demonstrated in the creative and engaging learning environment she provides for her students at Edison.

In support of Edison’s commitment to support student achievement and success, Banks serves as the grade level team leader on the Edison School Leadership Team (SLT).

In 2020 & 2018 Edison was recognized as a California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education.

In 2016, Edison’s student achievement earned the distinction of a National Blue Ribbon School. Banks is honored to work with the dedicated students, staff and families of the Edison community.

Prior to her service at Edison, Banks served as the Title I / English Language Coordinator and a teacher at La Salle Avenue Elementary School in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Banks has served as a classroom teacher teaching grades K-2 at Loreto Street Elementary and Weigand Avenue School (LAUSD).

Banks has conducted workshops in LAUSD in Multicultural / Diversity Education in conjunction with UTLA and the Los Angeles County Office of Education. In 1999, Banks travelled throughout Mexico, Belize and Guatemala with the Odyssey Worldtrek where she served as an educational correspondent for grades K-12. During her Odyssey Worldtrek service, Banks conducted a live webcast interview with 1992 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Rigoberta Menchu.
