Educated in Beirut, Lebanon, science and math teacher Jamil Ahmadia constantly explores creative ways to make learning interesting and relevant for his students at Waiakea Intermediate School in Hilo. Some of these include gathering data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's GLOBE Program and collecting and testing water samples for a regional water investigation program. As the head of the science department and a member of a four-person interdisciplinary teaching team, Mr. Ahmadia develops and implements meaningful teaching units that meet state learning standards. Additionally, Mr. Ahmadia is advisor to the school science club that he founded over ten years ago, and coordinates the district's annual science fair.
