"The legacy I hope to leave is ongoing curriculum evolution, high standards of excellence, and a strong record of professionalism," says James Wood, principal of Sidney High School in Sidney. Mr. Wood thinks that the educator's role has changed little, if at all, in recent years. "The most important contribution an educator can make is to give young people an understanding of themselves, the skills to succeed in a changing world, and a sense of self-worth. This has not changed," he says. Pointing out that eastern Montana is a sparsely populated area, Mr. Wood feels that the region would benefit from more "teacher/administrator learning centers to improve staff development opportunities." He has taken the initiative to develop this plan, and has already approached several organizations. The project is still at the discussion stage, but Mr. Wood hopes it will become a reality in the not-too-distant future. When this project comes to fruition, it will be yet another instance of Mr. Wood's efforts to support and encourage his family.
