At Grass Valley Elementary School in Winnemucca, James Gilboy transforms his first graders into high-achieving, self-motivated readers. His instructional innovations include a small-group reading instruction program for at-risk readers: the Zoo Phonics Program, which associates an animal and a sound with each letter of the alphabet; and a children's literature program that combines drama, math, creative writing, music and technology. Mr. Gilboy has also adopted a program called Principle-Centered Teaching, which provides educators with a set of guiding principles to follow while teaching. He contributes his leadership as director of Grass Valley's Technology Committee and president of the Humboldt County Teacher's Association. Mr. Gilboy is also a member of Grass Valley's School Improvement Team.
