Jim Carson, 8th-grade language arts and social studies teacher at Kernodle Middle School in Greensboro, instructs his students using the Paideia method, in which the teacher divides his time between lecturing, coaching projects and facilitating seminars. In studying a period of history, Mr. Carson coaches his students through a number of projects, including research papers, illustrated books, simulations, murals, debates, theatrical pieces, radio or video productions. He has adapted the Writing Workshop approach in his classes and conducts seminars on literature using the Socratic method. An early recipient of National Board Certification, Mr. Carson regularly mentors other teachers and trains them for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
