Jackie Stevens, who teaches science to fifth graders at Northeast Middle School in Meridian, is the creator of several "hands-on, minds-on" science programs at her school. Local geologists, forestry consultants and other science specialists frequently visit her class or lead her students on field trips. A Log is a Condo, one of Mrs. Stevens' programs, is designed to teach students about forestry management practices, the impact of natural disasters, and tree and soil varieties and compatibility. The fieldwork component of this program enriches and informs the classroom research that accompanies it. The pilot program that Mrs. Stevens is helping to develop at her school in collaboration with the Mississippi Department of Geology will involve students in fossil research and help them design a fossil identification workbook based upon their findings. In 1992, Mrs. Stevens received a Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence in Elementary Science from the National Science Foundation.
