Irene Yamashita, oral communication and video production teacher at Kapunahala Elementary School in Kaneohe, has overseen the production of a wide array of student video projects, several of which have aired on local television news programs. Frequent winners of state and national History Day competitions, Mrs. Yamashita's students have also created instructional videos for the school such as "Mediation and Problem-Solving." In addition, they produce the school's weekly student-run news show, "Inside Kapunahala." She supports her video production curriculum with media literacy units such as "Campaigning for Candidates," which explores political strategies during the electoral process. An accomplished speaker, writer and videographer, Mrs. Yamashita is a founder and former president of the Hawaii Video Curriculum Association.
