Teacher Herman Leong tries to show students the beauty, importance and simplicity of mathematics at Radford High School in Honolulu. As chair of the math department, Mr. Leong restructured the math curriculum, moving toward a standards-based model that has resulted in improved student achievement. He frequently encourages students to take Advanced Placement courses, and when a vacancy left the school with no AP Physics teacher, Mr. Leong filled the role though he was already teaching an AP Calculus class. Co-chair of the school's Budget Committee and a member of the school's Master Plan committee, Mr. Leong is a facilitator for the school's Focus on Learning (FOL)/Standards Implementation Design (SID) efforts. He also provides mentoring to student teachers as an Observation Participation Teacher.
