"I want my students to know that there are no problems that together we cannot overcome," said Henrietta Grant, principal of Austin-East High School in Knoxville. Ms. Grant joined forces with the Knoxville YMCA to develop Leadership 98, a program that monitors the progress of freshmen students. Guidance counselors, teachers and administrators annually select the 50 freshman who participate in the program's planned monthly activities. These activities include roundtable discussions with business leaders, human resource managers and health professionals as well as workshops on law enforcement and legal issues conducted by members of the police force and court officials. Ms. Grant also spearheaded efforts to create a GED night program open to all members of the community. A firm believer in the use of technology in education, Ms. Grant worked to secure computers for each classroom at her school.
