After winning the Milken award in 2006, Heather returned to the regular classroom for several more years. As more and more leadership opportunities arose, she decided to pursue her administration certification. In 2015, Heather became the Dean of Students at China Middle School in China, Maine, and then became the Principal at Windsor Elementary School in Windsor, Maine in 2018.
Fifth-grade teacher Heather Wilson customizes the learning experience for every child at James H. Bean Elementary School in Sidney. Requested by more parents than any other teacher, Ms. Wilson has incorporated a variety of instructional strategies and practices in her classroom, including guided reading groups, individualized learning plans, technology, home-school journaling, and differentiated instruction. She created a program in which students earn paper money to spend at an auction, where they bid on items ranging from books to lunch with a favorite teacher. Under her expert tutelage, all of her students have made significant gains in reading, writing and math, with several students progressing as many as two or three grade levels from when they entered her classroom. Ms. Wilson has served on the District Lecture Committee and the District Assessment Committee and is a member of the Grade Level Expectations Review Committee. As busy as she is, she still finds time to coordinate the annual talent show. This is one teacher who demonstrates plenty of talent of her own.
