Geraldine Hawes teaches English, speech and drama to tenth-, eleventh- and twelfth-graders at Cleveland High School in Cleveland. As a member of the Tennessee Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, Mrs. Hawes is affecting the quality of secondary school education in her state. She also represents the State of Tennessee on the Appeals Committee, an organization that evaluates the formal appeals of schools that have been denied accreditation. At Cleveland High School, Mrs. Hawes has implemented the Toastmasters program, which culminates in a student-organized event that allows students to display their skills as public speakers before parents and other community members. "Taking the Show on the Road," another program Mrs. Hawes created, is a six-week student-planned-and-directed drama project. Mrs. Hawes was named 1990 State Teacher of the Year.
