"Leadership means inspiring others to share a vision and turning that vision into a philosophy of daily educational practices," says Georganne (Peel) Rollans, principal of Crawford Elementary School in Russellville. Under Ms. (Peel) Rollans's leadership, Crawford Elementary School has implemented the Accelerated School Process, a system designed to address the specific educational needs of students. A Character Education program that uses examples from literature and a "Words of the Week" system to focus on the development of social skills is also in effect at the school. Reading Recovery and Literacy Groups are two new programs that contribute to the intensive school-wide literacy campaign Ms. (Peel) Rollans has introduced as this year's focus. Ms. (Peel) Rollans is also working to establish a partnership between the school, the Department of Health and local agencies to provide an intervention education program for the economically disadvantaged families in her community.
