As principal at Audubon Junior High School in Los Angeles, Gene McCallum has succeeded in generating widespread parental, community and student involvement. Under his supervision the school coordinates thirteen parent and support groups, which perform a broad variety of functions. For example, members of the Black Engineers Support Group visit math classes and work directly with students. Mr. McCallum has also initiated fifteen student recognition programs including a Peer Tutoring Hotline in which students are paid to tutor callers. Recognizing the need to reach out to "at-risk" youth, Mr. McCallum coordinated the "Adopt-a-Kid" program, which fosters a mentor relationship between students and teachers. Under his leadership Audubon has earned recognition as a state and federal Distinguished School.
