Currently principal of Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School in Elk Grove, Felicia Bessent taught special education and music at Valley High School in Sacramento at the time of her Milken Educator Award. In this capacity, she was committed to the idea that every student can be successful and designed lessons to meet individual learning styles, encouraging students to achieve all they can. In her classrooms, in her role as class advisor and in her various activities within the community, Ms. Bessent puts a high priority on instilling personal and cultural pride in young people, and she serves as an inspirational role model to her students. Her commitment and teaching skills have earned her many honors, including being named 1991 Teacher of the Year by both Elk Grove Unified School District and Sacramento County.
